Precast Concrete Pipe

Throughout the world, concrete is the most commonly used building material. In a simple form, it is a blend of paste and collectives. These are different from flexible pipes as concrete pipe has least dependence on fittings to support loads. It relies chiefly on success of brute strength manufactured into the pipe. This creates a marvelous difference in the design, the fixing method and the continuous success of a project. In precast concrete pipe, the compressive strength normally ranges between 4000 psi and 8000 psi. Maintaining compressive strength is the function of other factors including aggregates, material made of cement, the production process, curing process and mix design. Most of the designs for precast concrete pipe conveys to 28 days compressive strength.

ASTM C76 and AASHTO M170 do the standardization of precast concrete pipe. The precast concrete pipe is tested in the plant using D-load standards. The accommodating strength of a pipe is determined under the three-edge-bearing test conditions. D-load tests the pipe by articulating in pounds per linear, foot per foot of inner diameter or horizontal span, under severe loading conditions where there is no sheet and no sideways support, under three-point loads.

In precast concrete pipe, wire provides the support, which increases its inner strength. The shape of wire reinforcement, which is in the form of cages, is exactitude, fabricated by automatic cage welding machine. The cage machine manufactures machine-produced bells, which are dimensionally stable and have bunged engineered lenience. The reinforced concrete pipes have superior load capacities.

Precast concrete pipe is a stiff pipe, which provides both structure and medium when it appears on site. Precast concrete pipe has an inflexible pipe system, which depends 85% on the strength of pipe and remaining 15% depends on the strength provided by the soil envelope. The inherent strength of pipe recompenses for the construction faults and higher fill heights through depths. On the other hand, the flexible pipe is 95% dependent on soil support and the installation proficiency of the contractor. Only a precast concrete pipe can viaduct over unequal beddings without affecting the pipe hydraulics.
